About j81 Studios

Commercial Photographer in Western New England.

j81 Studios is an independent commercial photography studio in Western New England. We work with manufacturers, craft producers, marketing consultants, and boutique agencies as their outsourced visual department — four core services in two clean buckets: PEOPLE (business photography and professional headshots) and PRODUCT (advertising and point-of-sale catalog).

Founder and lead commercial photographer Jonathan Jones launched the studio in April 2021. The short version of the story: a design career that kept circling back to photography until it finally took over.

Meet Jon Jones — agency veteran, now the photographer behind the camera.

Jon is not a photographer who learned business. He is a designer and creative director who moved into running an independent commercial photography studio. Seventeen years on the design side before founding j81: graphic designer at FirstLight Marketing Communications (2004–2007), seven years as Art Director at Market Mentors (2007–2014), two years as Graphic Arts Manager at Bob's Discount Furniture corporate (2014–2016), and five years as Creative Director at Titan USA (2016–2021).

The through-line was always photography: directing it, hiring it, sourcing it, briefing it, and eventually shooting it himself. j81 Studios is what happens when a marketing-trained brain ends up behind the camera..

“I bring my twenty years in advertising and creative layout design to the camera in a way that lets me frame shots with the client's result in mind.”

— Jon Jones, Founder

The design-trained eye.

Most photographers frame the shot. Jon frames the shot and the layout it is going to live inside — the billboard, the ad copy, the logo placement, the social-feed crop, the website hero. That habit comes from twenty years on the buyer side of the desk: hiring photo work, sourcing stock, briefing photographers, and laying out the final piece. The result: shots arrive already composed with breathing room for type, logo, and crop. Most studios deliver an image; j81 delivers an image that fits the campaign it was made for.

The same instinct carries into editing. The design-layout reflexes are still running in the back of his head while retouching — editing toward a final use, not just a "pretty file."

How we work.

j81 Studios markets as an outsourced visual department, not a one-off vendor. Project work is welcome, but retainer relationships are the structure we lean into — recurring content needs, ongoing campaigns, and consistent visual identity across a year's worth of marketing output. Behind the scenes, we run a tight production process: clear scope before deposit, predictable turnaround, two rounds of post-production included before an upcharge, and honest mistakes on our end fixed free.

The client roster skews toward manufacturers, craft producers, marketing consultants, regional banks, and boutique agencies — companies that take marketing seriously enough to want a working commercial photographer on retainer rather than a per-job freelancer. j81 is small enough that the same photographer who briefs the project also shoots it and runs post, which keeps the work direct and the communication unfiltered.

The studio.

A 500 sq ft commercial photographer studio on the ground floor of an industrial facility at 42 Water Street, Granville, MA. Daily carrier pickups for ship-in product work. On-location commercial photography across Western New England — from rooftops to restaurants to manufacturing floors — is part of the offer, not a stretch. International and overnight productions are negotiated per job.

Jon is great to work with. I've worked with him in multiple capacities, and his work is phenomenal. He is also really helpful in providing info to help clients get the most out of their photo shoots and his communication is clear and concise. It is always a pleasure to work with j81.

I hired Jon to do an on-site photoshoot for my office. Myself and our staff were thoroughly impressed with Jon's professionalism and attention to detail. Jon and his team went above and beyond to ensure our photoshoot went smoothly and that we felt comfortable with the end product. Simply put, Jon is the best photographer I have personally had the pleasure of working with. If you are looking for a commercial photographer I highly recommend j81 Studios.
